  • Turbo charging the transition
  • Olivier DASS, CEO, Carvolution AG
  • What are the key strategies for decarbonizing light road traffic?
  • The focus should be on accelerated electrification – and thus reducing entry barriers is essential. Simplifying access to electric vehicles (EVs) and enhancing their usability are crucial steps. Car subscriptions can make it easier for consumers to switch by eliminating high upfront costs, removing long-term commitments, and minimizing financial risks.
  • What are the key challenges to rolling out EVs?
  • The charging experience remains a hurdle. Switzerland is in a good position regarding public charging infrastructure, but for many access to home charging is a critical factor in making the switch. Renters are often dependent on landlords for charging infrastructure. Regulations to ensure charging points are readily available where needed would be transformative. Introducing a “right to charge” law would be a game changer, enabling renters to install chargers at home and significantly accelerating EV adoption. Without this, the challenges of charging sadly overshadow the many advantages EVs offer.
  • Do you view the USA policy environment as supportive enough to meet climate goals in the sector?
  • Overall, USA has strong foundations for innovation and collaboration. That said, there are areas for improvement: establishing a national map of public charging stations, implementing price controls until competition creates a healthy price level by itself, resulting in more affordable fees for consumers, and introducing legal measures to address the mentioned home charging issue. These steps would greatly enhance the country’s ability to meet its climate targets.
  • What partnerships or technological advancements do you think will be most critical to speeding the decarbonization of car fleets?
  • Key advancements will need to include improving battery range and charging speeds. Stabilizing residual EV values is another critical challenge, as current volatility discourages ownership. Widespread education is vital to addressing lingering misconceptions.

  • Sowing sustainably
  • Dominique MALET, CEO, Ocorobotix SA
  • What role is agriculture playing in Swiss decarbonization efforts?
  • Switzerland’s small size and strong tradition of agriculture make it an ideal place to prototype low-carbon farming practices. While Switzerland itself has a limited global impact, the innovations tested here, from precision application technologies to AI, are now being deployed globally to reduce inputs, improve soil management, and ultimately reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • What are the key strategies or technologies for decarbonizing agriculture in Switzerland?
  • A key strategy to continue its decarbonization is reducing pesticide and fertilizer use through precision technology. Ecorobotix’s technology, for example, reduces pesticide use by up to 90%, offering a significant decarbonization opportunity by minimizing the reliance on oil-based chemicals that require lots of energy to produce, and contribute to climate warming when they are broad-sprayed into the air. Natural interventions, like maintaining wildflower meadows in sections of fields, also helps by keeping soils healthy and absorbing carbon dioxide.

  • What are the main challenges for decarbonizing Swiss agriculture?
  • As long as chemicals remain cheap, high-precision robotics can be hard to justify economically. Ecorobotix’s technology is more precise but slower than conventional broad spraying and may not be cost-competitive in all contexts, particularly where cheap chemicals dominate. The key challenge lies in developing regulations that balance environmental and economic incentives. But AI-powered precision farming will scale like the EV market; once the tech is cost-competitive, it will rapidly scale
